Got a DVD-Rom [player] and a DVD burner. The dvd player will play a dvd fine but when the same dvd is put in that same player "to burn" to the dvd burner, I get an error message saying the "dvd cannot be read". I am guessing this may be due to the dvd being copyrighted? If that is the problem what can I do please to copy this dvd? I tried copying a home-made dvd and this copies fine.

Other problem I am facing is that the dvd burner will burn the home-made dvd fine but it will not play the copied dvd, the copied dvd however will play fine in the dvd-rom, any ideas please?

As you guessed, copy-protected discs are designed not to be copied.

I'm curious about your setup. Is your DVD-ROM / DVD burner combo inside your PC, or is this in a DVD duplication unit? Makes a difference. A DVD duplicator cannot load DVD ripping software that can deal with copy protection. If it's all incorporated in your PC, check out a ripping tool like DVDFab HD Decrypter.

There may be several possible reasons why your home-made DVD will play fine in one unit but not the other. Most likely, you are using crappy media. DVD-ROM players tend to be the most forgiving of disc errors.

At this point I really should stop being surprised at how many members have been here for years, made hundreds of posts, and yet never seem to have heard of DVD copy protection or how to deal with it.

I am aware of using both Shrink and Decrypter for copy protection purposes, just wanted to make sure it was a copy protection problem in the first place. and also I wanted to get a handle on the other main problem why the burnt home-made dvd won't play in the burner in which it was burnt but plays in the rom? I am using Maxell blanks

Maxell is absolute crap. Use either Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden. Also make sure you burn using ImgBurn (not Nero!). Insure your home-made DVDs are fully DVD-compliant (structured with VIDEO_TS folder that contains all the necessary VOB, BUP, and IFO files). If you are using rewritable DVD discs, you must finalize them.

Also: DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter have not been updated in years. Neither can handle newer copy protection.

See, it is good I had posted here becuase the last time I had asked for help on copy protected dvd's which was a few years ago, Shrink and Decrypter was what was used back then, since then I never had to address this issue until now, so since you say those softwares are outdated, what's the best "free" solution nowadays DVDFAB HD Decrypter?

Also, I played back the original home-made dvd on the dvd writer and it plays fine, the original is on a TY disc and the burnt copy in on a Maxell so I guess the maxell is really crap so that should explain that.

Actually, it is not good. Since you've been on the site a few years, you should know how to read the stickies, or check the Tools section for the latest rippers.

You shouldn't ask for help every time the the old doesn't work with the new. (We hope) you wouln't ask why your CD burner doesn't burn DVDs.

Maxell is/was both a brand and a manufacturer.

Maxell-manufactured media, from 2001-2005 were good, available everywhere. By 2007, Maxell no longer manufactured media for consumers, however.

Maxell-branded media is all made by CMC or Ritek. CMC and Ritek is mediocre quality, notoriously unreliable, many bad burns.

Whether the Maxell is bad depends on how old it is. Check the ID.

See these links for blank DVD quality (best DVDs to burn, where to buy good blank discs) and then if curious read the DVD media guides (how long DVDs last, why discs go bad, how to test DVDs).

I don't use maxell to save any movies, I use TY, these maxells I had bought only to test optical drives as the Rewriteables don't work good after a few erases. Appreciate the info, will look into it, thanks!
