I have tried all the software you had suggested and found it difficult to decode my H 264 avi file. So I did a lot of searching and reading and I was almost at my ropes end when i found this Xilisoft Video Converter

It had done what I needed decoded the avi.

But I thank you for your suggestions cause it got me to do some research and reading.
