I read that I can connect a computer to TV if the back of the TV has RGB sockets.
Well, mine does not. But my DVD player connected to the TV does have some sort of RGB (Red=Pr, Green=Y, Blue=Pb) sockets.
So if I were to get the VGA/RGB thing would it allow me to connect the computer to the TV through the DVD player?

It will not work - the connectors on the DVD player are component video outputs. The RGB connections on a TV set or monitor are direct inputs for the gun colors.
