I'm using DVDx 1.8 to convert DVD to VCD. The quality is good but sometimes I got square pixels on screen. Does anybody know how to get rid of that? As compare to commercial vcd, I never saw this before. How can this be achieved. The motion search is set to Good, would that help?

those are macroblocks. to get rid of them you can try smoothing, softening(remove detail) the image to free up more bits for the encoder to work with. video noise amounts to fine detail so this should be filtered out as well. tmpgenc has a soften macroblock setting on the advanced tab. oh, and i'd like to add a pre-emptive '**** off *******!' should koalabear respond to this thread

ouch, that last respose has to hurt....
1 - Set all your quality settings up to highest for better results. Takes a little longer but always worked fine with me. I still love DVDx for the easy way to keep aspect ratios, overall quality and ease of cutting up the results. Overall top notch FREE product.
2 - Start playing with xVCD. At least in bit rate, not resolution. I've found that increasing it to a point (1500-1800) that I can still fit movies on 2 cds still allows me to play it on virtually anything that excepts VCDs. All the software players will work, just need to check your playback equipment (ie. dvd player, old laptop, playstation, whatever...).
3- Graduate to using DVD2AVI and TMPGenc. I've found it to be actually faster than DVDx and once I added the simple steps of sharpen image and simple color correction my results are awesome with the default VCD settings. No more worrying (not that there was much) about compatibility. Its not half as hard as its reported to be...as long as you don't want to play around too much.
These are the steps that got me to this point. Its been about 9 months of 'testing' now and other then goofing up on aspect ratios now and then things are looking better all the time.
Have a good one... -
