Every where I've read and researched they've said that the round Apple Pro Speakers M6531 are supposed to be able to work with the iMac G4. I have a iMac G4 (1GHz Flat Panel) with the mini jack port and my Apple Pro Speakers still won't work on it. I used to have some Logitech external speakers I hooked up to the headphones port and the sound worked fine, but now nothing through the Pros when I hook it up to the mini port. In system pref, under sound output, it's showing external speakers just the headphones and it's the only option that's available. I tried to reset the pram but nothing and I reset the PMU and still no sound. Is there any other way, something I haven't tried yet that can make those speakers work. I would hate to have to buy an expensive adapter only to have it still not work. I'm not cheap, I'm just confused...I supposedly have the right computer to play my speakers, so why isn't it working like it should. Help please!!!

There are two iMac G4 1GHz Flat panel models, the 17" that was introduced in february 2003 (M8935LL/A) and the 15" USB 2.0 that was introduced in september 2003 (M9285LL/A). Fortunately for this issue, they feature the same audio ports: analog headphone jack, digital Apple Speaker minijack (for Apple Pro speakers), and an audio line-in jack.

Perhaps you have already read these.

It 'sounds' to me like either the sound output port or the speakers are damaged.

Originally (when I first got my computer) I had smaller Pro speakers that came with it. Unknowingly I put a DVD in my iMac without changing the audio settings. I read some where that the THX sound is too strong for those speakers and I was supposed to change the audio settings before palying the movie. I thought I had blown my Pro's. Anyway that's when I bought the Logitech speakers and put them into the headphone port. But I recently bought new Pro's and there still is no sound. Is there a simple way (or anyway for that matter) that I can repair the sound output port myself. I don't live anywhere near a Mac Support store and I'm going crazy buying stuff for my iMac and having them not work??!! Plus, why is the sound output audio-in only coming up with the headphones option only??

I doubt that, as some chip or circuitry that sends the digital signal may have been blown. I don't know how much would have to be replaced, or even if those parts are still available. Try to get a quote from a repair center. Repairing may cost more than the day-value of this iMac.

Is there a way for you to verify that the speakers actually work? A similar Mac in your neighborhood or at a MUG perhaps? It would be nice to know for sure which of the two (the port circuitry or the speakers) is broken.
