i recently chanced upon this 3d photo montage, and think it was quite well done.

any idea what kind of software did they use to create this montage? i'm more towards still photo editing, but have limited knowledge on video editing.. previously used memoriesontv and thought it was quite good already, but didn't know i could do even more..

i like their way of panning and curious how they can selectively choose objects to "spin" or "flip".

    any suggestions?

It is possible to do it Vegas, but not with quite as much freedom as AE, and not with the same flexibility. I suspect a recent version of Premiere may be able to do some of this as well. However (and this is a big however), if you use Premiere or Vegas or similar, you will have to do a lot of prep work outside it, using something like Photoshop, GIMP or Paint.net. All your photos and elements will have to be masked, cleaned and saved as png or tga w/alpha files. If you work in AE then you have masking tools etc that will allow you to quickly do this work in place, instead of having to double handle everything.

AE isn't the only option - Combustion or F/X Home can also do it, and I suspect with the necessary prep work you could also do it in Blender just by using flat poly panels and mapping the pngs onto them.

I changed so you we can play it directly in this topic. Just add vimeo-link and it should work.

    Hi there,

Thanks for the suggestions. Does this mean that AE has the most gentle learning curve compared to the rest? I have pretty much limited experience with video editing as stated in my 1st post. Yup, was wondering they actually did all the "subject" masking in photoshop, export as graphics then put it back into video editing software. i can do it in PS too, but looking at that sample video it would probably take a lot of work, since there are so many subjects to mask out.

another thing : will AE be able to simulate depth of field effect too? i.e. focus changes from background to foreground and vice versa.

None of them are gentle when it comes to this type of work. But AE is the best positioned because this is what is was built for. Vegas and Premiere are editors first, and effects are a bonus.

The real secret to this type of work (in fact, any and all effects work) is planning and preparation. While many of the photos in the that montage are old and taken at various points in time, a lot of it has been taken specifically for this clip.

And yes, AE does depth of field and can do a reasonable focus pull simulation.

This tut : http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials/fracture_design/ covers DoF amongst other things.

zoobie : what were you talking about?

gunsl1inger : thanks for the explanation, i guess AE is really the right application for my kind of work.

there's really a lot to learn and i don't think i can jump in straight to mastering the specifics of the software.. just like photoshop starting with layers and masks etc etc..

hmm, i'll google for some really basic tutorials on AE, then go on from there. Thanks a million guys!

I agree, some nice effect in the vimeo video. But whatever you do, ditch the cinematic count down at the beginning. Nothing spells amateur more than that worn out opening.

haha.. alright. i actually think that opening was too overused.. extremely cliched. other than that i think it was pretty well done. aiming to do something similar..

That is also probably the only thing done with Premiere . . . .
