I've searched a variety of places for the answer to this, but to no avail. While I've found lots of info on how to rip a DVD, I've found little on how to re-assemble one. (At least nothing that strikes me as "clear cut"). I suspect this will be easy to answer for those more knowledgeable than me.
Here's my "tale of woe" and my question(s):
I've never ripped a DVD before. While I understand the concept, I'm weak on the specifics.
I created a DVD for a consumer client. It's neither protected nor copyrighted, nor does it contain copyrighted "prior works". If anyone "owns" rights to it, it's either me or the client. I've since discarded most of the pieces of the DVD, e.g. menus, buttons, etc, except for the raw footage, and 2 copies of the completed/burned DVD project (on DVD, not on HDD).
Two yrs later, the client returns saying there was a name misspelled in the opening credits.(A name, BTW, they never provided me, so I took my best guess).
I've been asked to make the correction, then make multiple copies of the DVD. I cannot reconstruct the DVD exactly, but I did find the one text panel I need for the correction. (It was in an autosaved backup that I overlooked when discarding the other pieces...lucky for me).
The piece I need to replace is that text panel display of about 4 secs in duration, but I want to preserve the existing menu structure. Because I was able to line up the old and new clips in my NLE timeline, then simply cut and insert, the overall length of the DVD should not be different from the original.
Here's what I've done so far:
-I got mpegStreamclip 1.2 AND the $ 20 Apple/QT mpeg reader.
-Using Streamclip, I converted the VIDEO_TS.VOB from my DVD to 'new.avi' and filed that on my HDD.
(Did I lose some quality by doing that)?
-Imported 'new.avi' to PPro/CS2, edited in the change, and filed it on my HDD.
I believe that should fix the footage of the misspelled name.
Now I'm stumped.
How do I preserve the menus and their structure?
When I open VTS_01_0.VOB in Streamclip, I can see the various menu items/panels.
From reading various posts, I'm under the impression I can "glue" the pieces back together without having to re-author the entire DVD, but I'm not sure how.
How do I proceed?
Are my next steps:
1) rename all other VOB files to .mpeg
2) import as "Assets" to Encore:
- my corrected .avi file, and
- all files renamed from VOB to .mpeg in step 1) above, then
3) Build the new DVD via Encore???
Am I correct about those steps? I can't believe it might be that "simple"?
Do I need other software or a different approach? (Maybe to preserve quality and/or the menu structure)? Someone suggested Womble would have prevented loss of quality, but I have no idea how much loss of quality I've suffered. The .avi created by Streamclip looks ok to me.
I have the entire Production Studio Premium/CS2 running on XP Pro, so I have Encore and PPro.
Do I need to do anything with all the other non-VOB files I see? Here are all the files on the DVD:
OpenDVD/Sources/
---> VTS_01_1_VOB (Folder containing a file of the same name:
VTS_01_1_VOB)
and these files in the Sources folder:
Menu_000 thru Menu_008 (these are all bitmap images)
Menu_000_SubPict thru Menu_008_SubPict (also bitmaps)
SPU_Apgc_Asf thru SPU_Ipgc_Qsf (these are Encore DVD Subtitles)
Video_Apgc_Asf thru Video_Ipgc_Qsf (these are all movie clips)
ClickMe - (a FireFox document file in the "OpenDVD" folder)
opendvd.pvm - (a PVM file in the "OpenDVD" folder; I don't know what a PVM file is/does)
Untitled - (a DVD file in the "OpenDVD" folder, also don't know what it is/does)
Video_TS (A folder on same level as OpenDVD)
I'm afraid of ruining the menu structure.
How do I reassemble this DVD to include the correction and still have the menu work correctly?
(Apologies for the length; hoping all the details might help).
I'm more than willing to provide additional info if it will help get me clear instructions on how to proceed.
All help greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
