  1. Hi,

This is my first post here. I've used the site on several occasions over the years, and have now run into an issue. I was able to reset the region code on my Sony BPD-S350 originally Region B and made it region free (thanks to the instructions found here). I've purchased a few Region A Blu Ray DVDs, and have not had any issue until now. I received the Max Payne last week, and decided to watch it this week end. Much to my chagrin the movie won't book it comes up with an error saying this disc has been coded for region A please use try viewing it in a player from the region. Something to that extent anyway. Anyone else encounter this issue in the past? Any way to circumvent it?

Thank you in advance for any help you might be able to provide me.

Well I don't know anything about region coding for bluray.

However if you have a computer bluray drive you can purchase anydvd hd. This will allow you to rip and strip the protection of the bluray disc and copy it to your harddrive.

From there you can convert to any number of compressed video formats like divx/xvid/mkv etc. Or if you have a bluray burner you can burn the original as is to a new disc without any region or protection issues.

    FYI anydvd hd is payware.

    1) What is a Blu-Ray DVD? - it's either a Blu-Ray or a DVD....which one?
    2) The hack you are referring to only removes the region problem from DVDs
played on the Sony BPD-S350....NOT Blu-Ray discs played on the Sony BPD-S350.

It actually came with a digital copy I could download onto a PC, so I guess I'll just watch it that way.

    1) As far as I know, there is a standard DVD, and a Blu Ray DVD.
    2) The Hack I'm referring to allowed me to see a bunch of Region A Blu Ray DVDs on the BPD-S350, at least that's what I thought. Are you saying they came region free and would have played regardless?

Here is the hack I'm referring to:

So in other words the other Blu Ray discs I purchased came without region protection?

If you look on the back of the DVD you will see the region. There are three regions for BluRay DVDs (yes, the term is correct) - A, B and C (We - Australia - are also region B). You will probably find that many that you have are A/B/C, so they play anywhere. Now you have purchased a Region A only disc, and hence your problem.

This is quite possible. I know that some Asian BluRay discs (particularly in Hong Kong) contain no zone codes (BluRay uses "zones" where DVD uses "regions"). From what I have read is seems that American BluRay discs are very inconsistent with some containing codes for all 3 zones, some containing codes for 2 zones (usually A and B) and some containing only zone A code.

Less "Zones" but a far bigger mess than DVD regions are/were

OP:The hack you linked is for DVD's not BD.

Max Payne is Region A and will not play on Region B Blu Ray players.

Before you buy another Blu Ray disk, check: http://bluray.liesinc.net/

I stand corrected. One of the local magazines has BluRay DVD entrenched in it's terminology.

Thank you, I'll have to save this link. One of the other movies I purchased is also not region free. Hopefully there will be a way around this in the future. Quick question though, legally aren't these companies obligated to with the region code out if you're moving from one region to another? With cell phones they're obligated to do so, e.g. if you have AT&T as a provider, and have a blackberry, they're obligated to provide you with the code to liberate your phone if you're moving to another country. Shouldn't something like that apply here?

Not necessarily, the BDA is an evil empire and likes to control distribution.
The regions on DVD's were voluntary but the zones on BD are mandatory.
Here's an example:OPPO will be releasing a BD player soon but it won't be region or zone free because of licensing agreements, all previous players were region free.

    Just to clarify:
Oppo's upcoming BDP-83 is their FIRST Blu-Ray player.
Their previous DVD Players were all region free.

There are no region free Blu-Ray players sold yet today.
The only region free Blu-Ray players available have been taken apart
by (semi) professionals and heavily modified (soldering circuit boards
    and replacing chips).

If you are in Australia you can buy the Kogan BD Player for AUD$249, and it is multi-Region (effectively region/zone free) out of the box. It is not BD 2.0, so no BD live, but for the price and the other features it is, according to the press reviews, not a bad unit.

Thanks goodnes for that. That's one feature I can happily live without.

In the UK there's also a hacked Panasonic available from a firm in Peterborough.
