Woman finds explicit pictures on loaner cell phone

BOSTON -- A woman said that she found several pornographic pictures on a loaner phone that a local retailer provided her with while her phone was being repaired.

Ruthis Phillip, of Boston, went to Best Buy to have her cell phone serviced. Because it had to be sent out for repairs, Best Buy provided her with a phone to use until hers was fixed.

When Phillip got on the bus to go home, she started looking through the phone's different settings and found 23 pictures in the phone, most of them pornographic.

"It's not fair. It's not fair to me to pick up a telephone that you loan me, that you loan me, and look at some trash like this," Phillip said.

She immediately called Best Buy and told them what she found on the phone.

The store manager told her they check the phones before they give them out, but Phillip said she does not understand how something like this could happen if that were the case.

"They did not take the time to look through this telephone, to make sure it was an empty telephone," Phillip said.

Phillip planned to return to Best Buy Tuesday afternoon to get a new loaner cell phone.

Best Buy said they are looking into the situation to ensure it does not happen again.

"At Best Buy, we are committed to protecting customer data privacy. We're investigating the situation and are fully prepared to change our procedures if necessary," said Justin Barber, of Best Buy.

It is not uncommon. We had several cases come to light last year after someone exchanged a faulty phone for what was supposed to be a new replacement phone, only to find similar photos on it. After that all sorts of people came out of the woodwork for their 15 minutes on the TV. None of them seemed to be as traumatised as they claimed to be.

The problem is that when they take the photos, these people think they look like Brad and Angelina. The reality is that they mostly look like Tom Arnold and Rosanne Barr. And nobody needs to be subjected to that kind of image.
