I have managed to join cd 1 and cd 2 of my movie dances with wolves to make one avi file to watch on my ps3.

I find i do not have subtitles,i have managed to get the subtitles (.sub) in 2 parts cd1 & cd2.

I would like to add these to my avi movie, but as optional on or off when viewing.

Had a look at the guides, but no sure if i need permanent subtitles or not.

    All help,as always much appreciated

    Regards ..Pensioner

First issue is joining the subs so you can get a single subtitle file. Subtitle Workshop can do this, with a little fiddling.

The big issue is that the PS3 does not recognise external subs. I will handle them in a DVD or AVCHD or Bluray, but not as a standalone file. If you can get the subs into a format that lets you mux them into a Divx container then you might get switchable subs, otherwise it is a re-encode to make them permanent.

Because the PlayStation 3 is DivX certified, you can mux subtitles into the video file and be able to turn them on/off.

You can do this with DivX Mux GUI:
    http://labs.divx.com/divxmuxgui

You select your video, audio and SRT sources and then it'll quickly mux and output a new .divx file.

You may need to use the tools already mentioned to get the subtitles in sync with the video, which you'll want to do before passing them through DivX Mux GUI.
