Please look in our glossary for definitions for PAL and NTSC
    https://www.videohelp.com/glossary
Basically PAL is TV in most of the world and NTSC is TV for North America (including the USA), much of the Caribbean, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. Those are oversimplifications for sure.

Since you live in the UK, the odds are that whether your DVDs are PAL or NTSC that they will play fine. If you live in NTSC-land, you would be at a significantly greater risk of playback problems.

Worth checking what each dvd player supports ... uk being pal, nstc could cause problems

There are a number of things which can cause non-playability and you'll have to work through those issues when you run into them, but keep the burners firmware up to date, use quality media like verbatim, burn at half the maximum media burn speed, and as for dvd-r, don't burn more than 4.3gig to disc should minimize the majority of problems from the pc side of things.

In Australia, while region coding still cause's problems, players are to support both pal and nstc playback ... the living dead (nstc only)

Yep, as mentioned, the UK is a PAL country, and it is always best to stay with that format. The exception: if your original movie is NTSC and it will play back just fine on your DVD player, the copy can also be NTSC. Converting between PAL and NTSC can quickly muck things up, so try to stay consistent with the source material.
