Upon startup I get this message: file is missing or corrupt, \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
Is there someway I can get to a restore point, if not, how do I make a Windows Automated System Recovery Disk ?

Appreciate any advise I can get.

Nope, you have a bit of work ahead to fix this problem > http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

Come down 1/3, just below "download this manual" is what you need to know.

If not already, google > Recovery Console cd ... hint > first pcpitstop forum link you come across

Now if their are passwords involved and you don't remember them > http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html (simple, just follow instructions to blank them prior to recovery).

If passwords are not a problem then recovery using linux is fine > http://www.petri.co.il/forgot_administrator_password.htm > http://www.simtel.net/product.download.mirrors.php?id=80024 (ebcd link) ... the recovery process is very similar.

Once done you should be up and running again ... back it up now before it becomes "self" obsolete.

  3. If you can't login, first try safemode see if you can at reboot press F8 until you get the menu. Then try the last known good startup. This for registry corruption only. I mentioned it but looks like your windows is corrupted virus hit perhaps. Now try that suggested link above for registry recovery ..... if couldn't The next step is to run windows cd and repair windows. Recovery that you ask, you should have done it when your windows was working. I guess you don't have a backup? Repairing windows might help you, if not you have to reinstall windows. Doing that none of your installed programs will work but you can get your data. So it is better to get your data by starting the computer with Ubuntu a free linux that can boot from cd. You have to download and burn it to cd. When you boot into Ubuntu you can get your data through USB. Or take the HD out and attach it to another computer as a HD.
If you need more help give us more detail and specs. It is easier to backup with something like Acronis or Ghost rather than create a recovery disk and apply it. Recovery disk is for windows system only. Before you plunge into anything ask, these were just guidline info.

Now you know why a disc image backup is mandatory.
