is mkv container able to play HD audio? I finally have it so that wmp will play these files, and i can play the audio files themselves, but when i play an m2ts file containing them i can't hear anything, or when i try to add the .thd file to mkv merge it treats it like a mp4 video file and won't work.

does mkv support HD audio, and how do you merge it in?

    thx,

I don't think so. Maybe the only option would be to convert the audio to a FLAC which can handle upto 8 channels. Do a search on google for
"mkv wiki" without the quotes of course and see if MKV can handle flac. I'd try and convert the thd file to a FLAC format and see what happens.

Watching eac3to convert .thd to .flac, it appears that it first extracts the ac3 core, i wonder if it is actually converting the whole file, or just the ac3 part. It does sound much better.

I've actually shifted my focus (after endless hours trying to sync up a/v on mkv files), and am now keeping everything in BD format on hdd, but stripped down to movie only and compressing video a little bit. I'm still looking to maintain as high sound quality as possible though. I was able to play thd/dts-ma with pwr dvd, but am now using total media theatre on account of the fact that it will work seamlessly with WMC, which claims to play HD sound, but I was unable to play thd with it. this is also a reinstall of OS since then, but I am pretty sure I have everything configured right for it. What worked best for me was to add vista codec pack, also after a clean install, and NO OTHER codecs, and it will play just about everything. I know people say to avoid codec packs, but I've found this one, providing nothing else is installed, works great, plays everything, and doesn't cause any conflicts with anything, also makes all thumbnails show up, it's pretty awesome for a single solution. the only thing i had to change in the settings is to enable 24bit output, then I could play HD audio files. I thought actually that the player would decode the files, but it is not working this time.

Does anyone know how to enable HD audio playback in either TMT, or PC, or both, however that works??

    thanks,
