  1. Hi folks. Meant to ask this a long time ago, but just recently I've been thinking of upgrading from my 27in CRT to a larger LCD monitor. Q: Just how good is this player at upscaling? I've got no gripes with it as it's played everything I've thrown at it, the USB port is a bonus, and support for new firmware (through this site) just rocks. Just would really like to hear anyone's opinion on the upscaling/upconverting claims of this player. Cheers to all.

I'd say average for circa 2007 and under $100 price point. I got my 5992 for $49 at Costco. If you want better look to Oppo @ >$150. Depending on which LCD-TV you buy, the TV may upscale better and/or convert to 120Hz.

Yeah, the Oppo option was what I was first looking at, but the price kept me iffy on it. That and the fact I wasn't ready to jump to HD tellies at the time. Hell, still might not just now, but thanks for the input.

  4. Some people say they can't see a difference between the Oppo and the Philips 5990/5992 upscaling of DVDs. It will depend in part on what HDTV you get, whether it has pixel-for-pixel mapping, how good its built in scaler is, how picky you are, how big the TV is, how far away you sit from the TV, etc. For example, most 720p HDTVs don't have a 1280x720 native resolution with pixel-for-pixel mapping. So if you send it an upscaled image at 1280x720 the TV is going to scale it again.

For upscaling, I find that my Tosh A-3 HD player and the PS3 provide clearer video. To me, it seems that this clarity is best noticed when the video is paused. Both players exhibit the same clarity when paused as when playing. However, the 5990 is noticeably deficient when paused. The same can be said when the units are in slo motion mode.

I didn't buy the 5990s for the upscaling but for their ability to play vobs and other files from a hard disk using the USB option.

  6. Thanks folks. Lots more to consider I guess. Though Jag, if I was going to stick with this player what HDTV would you suggest for best performance?

Get a Pioneer Kuro if you like plasma.

For LCD Samsung and Sony upper tier models rule.
Level 6,7,8,9 Samsung or Sony XBR.

Also, the main difference for upscale is broadcast interlace source (480i, 576i or 1080i) rather than progressive DVD.
