I changed to Avira because of odd glitches I was getting with AVG. After a few weeks it won't update. My internet connection is good (DSL) and working, the program just keeps reporting it can't update. I'm using Windows XP firewall.
I uninstalled Avira and went back to AVG 8.0,but I have the same problem,it won't update. Could this be caused by a virus?

try the free version of this and see what it says.
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

most av sites have a manual download option where you can get the updates and install them yourself that you might try.

Turns out I had the Zlob DNS virus. Had to buy a program called Exterminateit to get rid of it. My normal bot tool couldn't get rid of it. FYI
Problem ocuured because Avira doesn't protect against bots,AVG does so I will stick with it.

I use Avast, SpyBot, Spyware Blaster and Comodo firewall and they do fairly well at blocking malware.

I used Spybot-Search & Destroy to find and eliminate bots. Spybot couldn't get rid of Zlob DNA,it did get rid of 35 other bots I had. It took payware to get rid of the Zlob DNA.

    Disable DNS caching.
    And turn off system restore.
    Checking your Tcpip\NameServer helps.

This is just a trojan, and Avira will block it. If you´ve used AVG before, and got these trojans: something wrong with your system security settings.
They don´t come in without "asking" ... ;-)

  9. I had trouble with AVG not updating automatically. I figured it out though. I had three computers in the house all trying to update at the exact same time. I changed the update time on each PC so they were thirty mins apart and now no more problems updating.
