I heard that AVI file format is not compressed format. So how lot of films comes in .avi file format and confined to 700MB, 699MB etc, with superb quality? Is this format differ from normal .avi file format? or what is happend?

    thnks in advance.

  2. The AVI file format is just a wrapper for whatever it contains which can be compressed. DV and MJPEG are but two examples of this.

Think of the avi container as a drinking glass, and the video codecs as the various types of beverages that can be poured into the glass. (I got that analogy from someone on this site, but forgot who.) There is DV (a pretty standard video editing codec), divx / xvid (highly compressed playback codec), uncompressed RGB/YCbCr (good for multi-generational filtering and editing), etc. They are very, very different, yet each has an .avi extension. This has led to much confusion over editing, playback, and disc space issues.
