  1. I have heard that there is something that you can do to play SVCDs on DVD players that are only VCD compliant. I know it involves using TPMGEnc, and I think it involves making a MPEG2 think that it is MPEG1. Can anyone help?
    Thanks

  2. The only way I can get an SVCD to play correctly on my Sony CE600 is to multiplex then demultiplex (as non compliant VCD) in tmpgnce then burn with NERO as a non-compliant VCD.

I have viewed both the real SVCD (on my friends Pioneer) and the fake SVCD on my Sony and they look the same.

But, I have also started to just make standard VCDs with a bitrate of 1800 and they look and sound the same to me.

Now if I could get just get a XVCD - CQ_VBR file too work and I would be happy.

If you demux a SVCD MPEG then remux as VCD non-standard it is not a SVCD compliant MPEG anymore. It is not a "fake" SVCD but a XVCD. You will see it when you try to mux a 2nd audio stream.
    2. "VCD" with bitrate of 1800 is XVCD as well.

Sure the SVCD and the XVCD look same, because the MPEG is the same.
The only difference is, that a header is erased and few are probably changed. So you loose some nice SVCD features and that kind of XVCD is way off standard.

And what is the problem with VBR_CQ?

Actually you're incorrect there... SVCD & XVCD are most definitely not the same. SVCD is mpeg2 at 480x480(NTSC) or 480x576(PAL), whereas (X)VCD is mpeg1 at 352x240(NTSC) or 352x288(PAL)

I disagree. XVCD may have any resolution, any bitrate. It does not matter whether the video is MPEG-1 or MPEG-2, if you mux it as VideoCD (non-standard), every application will recognize the system stream as MPEG-1.

In that respect, yes I agree, but it depends on your circumstances. My Toshiba SD1300 for example seems very strict on resolution, and refuses to play non-standard resolutions for either format. It is only flexible in the video bitrate and audio rates, so I normally use xvcd pal(352x288), 2500kbps, 384kbps 48khz mp2 audio, whixh produces very good results.

  7. Truman:

Fake SVCD is my terminology for and XVCD, mainly because my friend makes cracks about my DVD player not playing SVCDs.

And what is the problem with VBR_CQ?

This is probably in the wrong forum, but I cannot get any of the XVCD templates with MPEG-2; such as Sefy's template, SxVCD for NTSC Basic (MPEG-2 352x240 29.97fps CQ_VBR 50, Layer-2 44100Hz 224kbps) to work on my player.

    If i create a movie with Pinoy2201s SVCD(NTSC) (MPEG-2 480x480 29.97fps VBR 1580kbps, Layer-2 44100Hz 224kbps) I can remux, mux and burn as a non-compliant VCD (XVCD) and it will work on my player.

If I create a movie with an XVCD template Pinoy2201s XVCD(NTSC) (MPEG-1 352x240 29.97fps CQ_VBR 100, Layer-2 44100Hz 128kbps) I can get that to work on my player, but only after I merge & cut in TMPGnce and rename the file. Otherwise I only get a file with sound, no video.

  8. So, oberkfell, you are actually getting your DVD player to
play mpeg2 files by multiplexing then demultiplexing svcd?

Is it still in 480 x 480 form?

Also I wonder if EasyCD would burn them as well as nero...
    haven't seen a non-compliant vcd option tho.

I've got a Toshiba 1200 dvd player that will
    play my 352 x 240 @ 2600 kbps and higher (x)vcd's.
(Won't play SVCD (or mpeg2 ). Any SVCD files I
get I have to convert the mpeg2 file to an mpeg1
file and then create the (x)vcd from that.)

I'd like it to play at 720 x 480 @ (any bit rate).
It tries to play at that res and gives picture and sound,
but can only properly sync the picture every few frames.
(seen by using frame by frame still mode). The result
is an unwatchable picture with about 80% noise and
    artifacts.

I was wondering is if this means give up... your
player will never play @ 720 x 480 OR ...if there was
some way of coaxing this player into using 720 x 480
by enabling /disabling some feature or parameter
used in the encoding process. I make my own CD's
    using TMPGnc.

    Thanks for your time,

  9. Yes, I have to demultiplex then multiplex as a non-compliant VCD. It is still 480x480, but as Truman said its an XVCD. So I lose some features of the SVCD, of which I don't use anyway.

I do not know about Easy CD. I had it, but uninstalled it because I was too darn dumb to figure it out. Just downloaded the newest version of Nero as I had a previous version and it was free. I also use VCD Easy.

My DVD is supposedly limited to 2500kbps. So I usually stick around that number for my max on an SVCD template.

I am the wrong person to ask about your resolutions, because I have not tried any others on mine. However; I did make a few 720x480s for my friends Pioneer and it worked for him.
