  1. Just bought a new Philips DVP5990/37 and noticed that the firmware is 37.08.51.27. I read that the latest firmware is 37.08.51.31. Where do I find this new firmware?

    I went to p4c.philips.com and I did found DVP5990/05 but no DVP5990/37.

Don't just update firmware for the sake of it. Many firmware revisions don't offer new features, but are to address very specific problems. If you are not experiencing these problems then the risk of updating often outweighs the benefit.

    mis3,

You can find the official Philips firmware here:

    http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpindex.pl?slg=ENG&cat=DVD_HOME_THEATER_CA&s...=Link_Software

The only change listed from version 27 to version 31 is "Auto recovery when HDMI video is lost".

I've updated my 5990/37 a few times using the USB thumb drive method described in the PDF that comes with the firmware. No problems, but be sure to follow the instructions.

The vb6rocod firmware that Redwudz linked you to is based on the version 31 software. I use it myself and it works very well.

  6. I will upgrade to version 31 but probably not vb6rocod firmware. I only use this DVD player to watch DVD.

Also, I plan to apply the region-lock back but I cannot find the Preference Tab. I saw a few options after pressing the Setup buttom on the remote but I did not see the Perference tab.

The 5990 won't let you access the Preference page during playback.

While the machine is stopped, press the Setup button, then the right arrow button 3 times to take you to the 4th icon on the top row. "Preference Page" should then display below the icons.

If you're in a sub-menu beneath any of the Setup options, pressing the left arrow will return you up to the icon level.

  8. Got it, now it"s Region-0. Thanks.

I played some DVD and I found that at fast movements, the motion looked choppy. I played with the HDMI Setup and it was much better if I set it to 1080i. Looks like the "Auto" setting cannot produce the best picture.

What should the proper HDMI setting be, 1080i or 1080p? Does this depend on the DVD?

Most HDTV's do a better job deinterlacing than the MediaTek chip in your Philips so it's best to output 1080i.

  10. Not sure if this changes your recommendation, my TV is a Sony 46-inch Z-series which is supposed to take 1080p signals.

I know this thread is a little stale. What I would like to change the stupid forced to watch ads and junk before reaching the title/root of a dvd. And add colorbars bit image to standby mode. You never know when colorbars can be helpful setting up a new display.
But hey, that's just me. The region free mod is such a blessing. I can finally retire my old Apex unit and play the dvd's I picked up in europe.

On some DVD players, you can hit 'Play' several times on the remote and it will skip to the main movie. Disney movies seem to have the most previews.

If that doesn't work try Stop, Stop, Play.
