sorry, this is only remotely video-ish

my brother bought a flat screen tv at a pawn shop

it has a universal-type remote (controls the tv and also DVD/R, cable, VCR and AUX)

but the tv didn't come with a manual, so i have no idea how to set it up

    i've googled remote codes

and i've found and downloaded the manual for the TV but it doesn't have any codes or instructions listed for setting up the remote to control other the video sources listed underneath the power button (with a "select" button under that)

could there be a separate manual for the remote? i couldn't find one

it appears to be a Philips 32PF7321D LCD/Plasma TV

okay, it's possible that it only works with DVD/R, cable, VCR and AUX made by Philips (a thought that didn't occur to me since most of my past DVD/VCR/TVs have a button for *any brand* TV/DVD/VCR on them)

I'd visit the manufacturer's web site and see if anything is posted.

Is the universal remote the same brand as the TV or is it an after-market remote? Google the brand name of the remote to see if you can find anything. Finally, check eBay to see if you can find the manufacturer's remote...

It *is* the same brand - and it's the one shown in the manual which i downloaded, probably from the manufacturer's website. However, I will check there again. (and i guess suggestion 3 doesn't apply)

    thanks

so far, they don't even have a manual at the website. they have a place to *buy* the remote. it seems to be the same one i have.

Have a look at: These Pages as it probably uses the same codes as other similair remotes.

    thanks

you know, I just determined that my remote doesn't have a code search button - or anything else that looks like it could be one. perhaps Philips truly is silly enough to create a remote that will only run its own components?

here is a picture of the remote (enlarged) in case anyone can see a likely button

  6. I would just buy a universal remote, you can get one at any electronics store for under $20.
If you have cable or satellite the remote will probably work, check your providers website for remote codes.

  7. RemoteCentral.com has manuals for many remote controls.

  8. some remotes have short instruction on the back or inside the battery compartment. Mostly you hold the main button eg TV or DVD etc for few seconds and it starts blinking then point it to the device and use arrows until it turns it on or off when you find the code the rest of the keys should work.

I fought a Philips remote that looked a lot like that one. It's programming consisted of:
    Turn on the TV.
Point the remote at the TV.
Press the mode button and then release it.
You may have to hold the mode button down for a few seconds until the red light on the remote blinks and stays on.
Press and release the up-channel button on the remote until the channel on the TV changes.
Press the mode button to lock in the program.

If this only gets 1 or 2 functions working and not the rest, repeat the process and skip the first channel change, just keep pressing the up-channel until the channel changes again, then press the mode button to lock in this second code.

Warning - It may require several hundred presses of the up-channel button before you get a channel change. There are hundreds of codes in the library of some models.

Your picture isn't clear enough for me to read the captions on the buttons. On your remote there might be some other button than mode,

The Philips site has pretty good instructions for finding the code and entering it, but you have to have the model of your TV and the remote. http://www.urc.philips.com/
