  1. I really love Mepis 7 however I really dislike KDE 3.5. I even dislike KDE 4 more as I've downloaded a few live CDs that have KDE 4....

I would much prefer Gnome as my desktop....

Is there a way to install Gnome or what are the chances of future Mepis having Gnome?

Or can someone recommend a good Mepis like distro that has Gnome?

I've tried Ubuntu and I did not like it much....

    Cheers

Mepis is on my laptop which I haven't booted in probably 2 months now, but I believe in the repos you will find something like "gnome-desktop". If you mark that for installation, it should find and drag along anything else it needs. When you boot to the login screen, look under session, and it should then show up.

    Hi,

It's been a while back but I successfully installed Gnome over AntiX 7.01 which is a fluxbox based "lighter" version of MEPIS. I think the only caveat was to make sure the MEPIS repos were not enabled while you were downloading/installing Gnome. The AntiX forum at MEPISlovers should be able to give you more specific guidance with the current version of AntiX.

Try Mint Linux if you like Gnome.

I would try Linux Mint ... it is based on Ubuntu but is MUCH better in some key aspects (like having most multi-media codecs pre-installed) plus it does use the Gnome desktop.

Been using it since 3.0 then 3.1 then 4.0 and now version 5.0 was just released this week. I'm currently still using version 4.0 because I'm not looking forward to the "upgrade process" but no reason for you not to go with 5.0 if you want to try it.

One key note though ... it was just released on June 9th and then a couple of days or so later a major bug was found and they said that an all new ISO would be made. Not sure if that is available just yet.

I just checked the website: http://linuxmint.com/

Apparently the fix was made and a new ISO is available. It is being called Linux Mint 5 Elyssa R1 (Revision 1)

I would give it a try

Another distro I have enjoyed in the recent past is openSUSE and the final version of the newest version (11.0) is due on June 19, 2008 which is only 1 week away from today. They release a separate KDE LiveCD version and a separate Gnome LiveCD version. They also have a DVD release that has both on it and you can pick which you want when you install (but with no live preview). So you might want to wait and try it but having said that I still like Linux Mint better!

For info on various Linux distros be sure to check ---> http://distrowatch.com/
