  1. OK...got the Gigabyte Board and an along with 2GB of RAM.

So I take it all apart, put everything in...and I get this: power going to the motherboard (Fan is turning, LAN line is green etc...) the HD is moving and LED is on. The video card seems to be on since the heat sink is warming up...but my monitor can't see the video card or the other way around. I tried putting in the old video card, nothing. I made sure cables were attached...unattached and reattached.

Now this is my first REAL DIY from motherboard to CPU...I don't know WHAT it could be. Please help....this is killing me.

ETA: I ripped out my floppy and it seems theres only 1 IDE slot so I'll be picking up some new gear again soon as far as DVDRW goes...the cord that allows for 2 connections to the 1 slot is too short to reach both DVDRW and HD

AND I do get 1 beep at the begining but nothing showing up on the screen and the screen telling me to check that cables are connected (They are). PSU is a 500W

Remove everything except the cpu and RAM, and power it on. You should get beep (error) codes for missing video. If yes, then add video card. You should then be able to see the BIOS post and further errors. If no, you have a bad MB or RAM.

sometimes when this happens I have people disconnect the power cord from the back of the pc, hold the power button down for a few seconds..then plug it back in and try again.

also, make sure your CPU fan is connected to the power slot designated for the CPU fan...sometimes motherboards have more than one and if you don't have it plugged in the right one it won't come up.

  4. Do you have both 24pin and 4pin power connectors attached?

the motherboard has pci-e graphics ports, you did get a new video card and didn't force the old gt6600 in, right?

you might also try hooking your monitor to the onboard graphics port on the motherboard. from there you can choose to disable it and use a plug in card as the first display device.

did you plug a power connector from the powersupply into the gf9600? pci-e video cards use a rectangular 6 pin connector iirc.

Check to see if the board has a Bios reset jumper. It could be in the reset position which will prevent the board from posting.

If you can't find the BIOS reset jumper, you could pull out the round battery to reset the BIOS. Reinsert the battery. This will set the BIOS to default setting.
One question, does the motherboard BIOS support your particular CPU or does it needed an update flash?

If after stripping it down to basics it still goes no further, suggest you update psu as it sounds more like the system just is not getting enough power.

As for the graphics card, it depends on manufacturer, not nvidia, if extra power coupler is used.

  12. I stripped it all down to nothing but the board, CPU and RAM. I got a post, but not into BIOS.

A quick call to the shop and they said that the new board is smaller and that a piece of metal (Bracket or something) might be shorting the circuts. After poping it back in, it started making funny sounds and not posting.

Should I pull out the center piece of metal that I THOUGHT was used to align the board properly inside the case?

no metal should touch the mb except the small support posts that go into the case and hold the mb about a half inch up. they are ground spots and the screws help ground the board and secure it to the case. there should not be any of the metal support posts anywhere there isn't a screw hole.

I had similar problems and symptoms (fans running but not mobo; occasional response when holding in power button). Do not rule out a faulty or inadequate power supply. My situation was completely remedied when I switched out the PS.

  15. Current situation:

When the video card is in and connected to the monitor, the built in monitor (Connected or not Connected bleep) comes up. It shows as not connected. If I turn it on, it will all run (Power going in) but will not load windows. I've read that you need to have a monitor with a signal to get into windows.

If I remove the card (And not just the power cable, but the whole card has to be removed) the I turn on the onboard video, it works.

I tried putting in my last Ge Force PCI 16 and got the same bad crap as with my new one. I'm wondering if it's the slot.

have you tried going into the bios while connected to the onboard video and re-setting the bios to safe defaults, and then changing the first video device to pci/agp or however you disable the onboard video?
