I REALLY wasnt sure where this goes...
Well i have a series im trying to convert from HD .mkv files to normal format avi OR mpg so i can watch them in my stand alone dvd player. So my question is is there a way i can keep the crystal clear 720p image even after converting the .mkvs to .avi r .mpeg? i really dont mind if the file size after output is larger then an average 250 mb avi file.

The closest you will get is to convert the files to Divx/Xvid avi at the highest bitrate you can use to keep the filesize under 2GB (use a bitrate calculator like Vcalc to work it out) and keep the width at 720 pixels. It won't be HD quality, but as has been pointed out, you can have HD quality on a SD player.

ok my bad lol its an upconverting dvd player that can play things in 1080p....does that make a diffrence?
-
nope. still only reads normal DVD material. 720x480 for ntsc players. only up-converts it to 1080 for HD tvs if hooked up through hdmi cable.

well it is hooked up to my plasma using an hdmi cable that said it supports 1080p on the box and i do have the ability to burn DL discs if that even makes a diffrence so yah sorry for my unknowing newb brain

All it will do is upscale a standard definition video to 1080p as it outputs it to your plasma. It cannot read anything other than standard definition DVD video discs, or standard definition Divx/Xvid video. That is all it can do.
If you want to encode or view HD files then you need a player capable of that. This means either an Xbox 360, PS3 or Bluray player that has some flexibility to play bluray files from DVD discs. Not all BD players will do this.Read my blog here.

There are also specialized media players that support a wide range of HD video. A few examples:

Welll i do have a X360 with high def cables but ive never been able to get it to read avis and when i try to use the media centre optino to stream the higdef content from my computer the files skip and the sound becomes out of sync and the picture will get grainy.
