I'm thinking about getting wireless headphones, mostly since I live in a townhouse and that way I can still listen to TV when I go to the bathroom or otherwise do stuff around the house (and yes some TV shows you really don't need a visual anyway). While looking at wireless headphones, the though occured to me that a FM transmitter should be able to do the job as well, at least the whole house type. That and just use my walkman. Any reason why I'd want to pick one over the other?

There are a lot of crappy FM transmitters on the market, so if you do buy one, buy a Ramsey. It will likely provide you with the best sound quality. The Ramsey FM10C will probably work fine! If you need more range, you could buy (and attach) a Ramsey LPA1 amplifier. Both units are sold as kits, but there are plenty of people who buy/assemble/sell them. You can check eBay or Amazon for deals.

On the down side, your next door neighbor might pick up your broadcasts if they happen to tune in your frequency. But that could also work in your favor for certain things....

In my case it would work to my advantage, because I could tell them to turn down their stereo.

Yeah wireless headphones might be a better option. They have them in the 5.8ghz range these days I believe. Though they'd be the more expensive models.

I'd be interested in testing out those surround sound headphones that are supposed to have true surround sound. If it worked at all those would be killer....

I think Sennheiser makes some decent wireless headphones.
HOWEVER: With an FM transmitter you can use any FM radio to receive your broadcasts. A wireless headphone system doesn't offer that flexibility.

Yes I quite agree that Sennheiser makes some decent wireless headphones.
