Can anyone help me out? Handbrake crashes when I try to convert to AVI/XVID. Anything else that people recommend?

MPEG Streamclip plus Apple's MPEG2 component ($20). It's worth the $ because it permits the use of all sorts of other utilities.

For conversion from a DVD to Divx/xvid on a Mac, the best tool by far is DVision3 (free). And of course, there's always ffmpegx, the Swiss Army Knife of Mac video (shareware).

That said, it's disturbing that Handbrake crashes on you. I've only known Handbrake to be remarkably stable, unless the source file has some problem. Does the conversion fail at the same point each time? If so, does the source file play smoothly through that portion of the video? If not, you might have to do a little fixing up first.

    VisualHub, best $23 spent.
I second Rumple on MpegStreamclip, but lately i've leaned alot
on VisualHub to get things done.
