I've been looking at the Philips 3576 and although it gets excellent reviews I am disappointed it does not have an IR blaster (although I can get it at a pretty decent Canadian price of $255).

Since there's a real lack of DVD-R's and esp DVD-R/HDD I'm not sure what options are out there that would fit the bill and usually I'd use this site's DVD Player list to narrow down what I need however sadly there isn't a checkbox to search for an IR blaster I thought I'd ask here.

If there are any HDD models that have an IR blaster that would be ideal however even just a standard DVD-R unit (esp if it has a sweet price point) that would be appealing as well.

I really don't care about (although sure they'd be nice) things like DL support, ATSC tuners, divx etc however upconversion with HDMI would be nice.

    Thanks for any advice.

  2. I just bought a Toshiba RD-XS35 new on ebay for $199 shipped a few weeks ago that has an IR blaster. The best HDD recorders ever made. They can be found on ebay for a decent price if you're willing to watch and wait for one.

For what it's worth, the RD-XS35 didn't have a working code for my Sony box.

  4. It works with my DN satellite. It doesn't turn the sat on though so I don't use it.

  5. Ah well.. The uk version phillips 5576 DOES come with an ir blaster. You could perhaps require a spare part ordered from o'seas?
Corned beef is now made to a higher standard than at any time in history.
The electronic components of the power part adopted a lot of Rubycons.

  6. An IR blaster shouldn't be very hard to find, if the recorder has a socket to plug it into. It wouldn't be hard to make one even. European electronics have a lot of things that U.S./Canada versions don't have.

I don’t think so. Many models would not play a + disk and have nothing to do with a +RW While good in their element Many other units Recorded and Played as good or better..

As to a n IR-Blaster If the Toshiba or any other Unit has one, What does it specifically operate.

DN is a independent supplier of Dish Network. Have they modified a Dish receiver that will accept codes that operate the disk receiver charnels or any thing else?

  8. There's no recorder made with better PQ or all the options for customizing record/playback/editing/menus than the Toshibas. I have a c-band satellite, the best analog source there is, I can't tell wheather I'm watching the sat or a Toshiba recorded disc. There's no other recorder where I can't see the difference between live TV and recordings. Who cares if they do + discs? Certainly not me.

The IR blaster is made to operate cable boxes and DBS satellites. DN receivers are Echostar and the IR blaster will operate them.

Thanks for the advice samijubal however the above post is why I'd be leery of ordering an OOP model since none of these companies seem to be willing to release firmware updates for new receivers (already experienced that with my Archos 404 not being able to control my Motorola cable box despite having an IR blaster)

However as an aside do you mind me PM'ing you some questions about C-Band? I'm toying with the idea of dropping cable and picking up something to do C-Band.

Sadly no jack on the back of it to plug it into.

  11. NG, you can PM me with any c-band questions.

Surprising that something wouldn't control a Motorola cable box. General Instruments/Motorola satellite receivers all use the same code to operate them, except 4DTV uses a different code than c-band.

Get an Archos 704 or 605 or 705 - IR Blaster works well here in UK, and it encodes to Divx 4.0 on the fly, from an NTSC or PAL source (no problems with interlace)! I have Sky Satellite, and a box made by PACE - the Archos has all the codes for channel changes - which are much more reliable than the Sky channel-changer, as that often switches too late, and displays an info screen over your video for several seconds.
