Hi All,
I'm Juliet and I'm completely baffled as I try to save some video on a DVD disc and play it on our Blu-Ray player.
I apologise in advance if this is covered elsewhere or if I talk complete nonsense. Please ink me to previous links if you think I should be reading them.
OK. We have a Samsung Blu-ray player (BD-P1400) and what I want to do is view some video thats been recorded on digital camera on the Blu-ray.
I bought some DVD-RW discs today (Philips 4.7 DATA) which are compatable with the Blu-ray as per the instructions.
There are 2 things that I think are causing the problems,
1) 'Playback can be performed with DVD-RW discs in the Video Mode and finalized only'
2) 'The unit cannot play.....DVD-RW recorded content such as divx, avi, mpg, mov, wma'
So, Questions.
1) How do I burn to the disc in VIDEO Mode and how do I check this is right? I read somewhere that VR is another name for UDF 2.01 (which I can see on the format options on my laptop) what is the VIDEO alternative?. I'm pretty sure that all discs are finalized when the disc is ejected (as per my laptop help pages).
2)What should I convert my files into? They are currently .AVI, .MPG and .MPEG (from different cameras).
All the video is currently stored on my laptop hard drive or flash memory sticks.
Please help me in simple terms if possible!!!! Thanks in advance.
Juliet

If it doesn't support divx, avi, mpg then you must convert to DVD-video. Use for example all-in-one dvd converters like ConvertXtoDVD, DVD Flick, Ulead DVD Moviefactory, Windows DVD Maker, etc.

If your videos are high definition there are programs that can burn them to DVDs that will play in high def (AVCHD) on a Blu-ray player. Ulead Video Studio for example.

No offense as you are new, but your post doesn't really contain enough info to be helpful to us. Open one of your videos in GSpot and post a link to a screen shot so we can see. There are all kinds of things in AVI files that can potentially cause playback problems on DVD (yes, this includes BluRay) players. The following things may or may not cause playback problems on any DVD/BluRay player that supports AVI/Divx/Xvid playback:
1) Use of GMC (Global Motion Compensation)
2) Use of QPel (Quarter Pixel)
3) Resolutions greater than 720x576
4) Packed bit stream.
5) File sizes greater than 2 GB.
6) Video bit rates higher than 2000 Kbps.
7) Use of anything but MP3 audio may require your video to drop its bit rate as low as 1200 Kbps for successful playback.
All of the above require re-encoding to fix, except for #4 which can be fixed with the program MPEG4Modifier.
Your DVD-RW discs might be crap (many brands are). Stick with Verbatim for best results.
UDF is a file system format. UDF 2.01 should be OK for Divx/Xvid/AVI playback.
Your source video might even be a format that simply isn't supported for playback at all. I don't know. If they are in high definition, then you have no choice but to follow jagabo's advice and author them as AVCHD to have any hope of playback on a BluRay player.
