    I've got some AVI files here that appear to contain subtitles, but I can't see them. I just installed the latest version of the K-lite codec pack. When I open the AVI file, the red ffdshow video decoder icon appears. The "Subtitles" and "default" items are checked, as well as "embedded (Text 2)" under the "Subtitles sources" submenu. If I open the properties of the video using Shift-F10 in MPC and go to "details", it shows:
    Video: XVID 640x480 23.98fps 1430Kbps [Video 0]
    Audio: MPEG Audio Layer 3 48000Hz stereo 136Kbps [Audio 1]
    Text [Text 2]

    I don't have any separate subtitle files. They seem to be embedded in the AVI.

    Xvid doesn't have embedded subtitles, AFAIK. If they are not a separate file, then they would be burned into the video and be visible all the time as a part of the video. Your 'text' may be something else. Maybe closed caption, but I don't know if that's possible with a Xvid.

    But you may be able to add subtitles from a subtitle site. Then if you find something like a .srt version of the subs, you just put them in a folder with the video and use the same name for both, just with different extensions, IE, movie.avi and movie.srt.

    I'll move this thread to our Subtitle Forum. You can read the 'Stickies' at the top of the forum for information on using subs. And someone there more knowledgeable about subs may be able to give you better information.

    Well, it is possible to embed the subtitles in something encoded with Divx 6 and using the Divx 6 container. Such a video file could be renamed to .avi. The problem is that almost no software players support the Divx container.
    You can install the free Divx Player at http://www.divx.com and see if it can play the subs, but don't be surprised if it fails. You might also try installing VLC and see if it has any luck.

    The video was encoded with Xvid, though.

    I tried using VLC player. When the video is opened, none of those icons appear in the tray. The video and audio play fine though, and it does show a subtitle track available. When I turn it on, however, no subtitles are displayed. Except, shortly after the beginning, "GAB2" is displayed for a few seconds. That's the only subtitle I have seen.

    I tried the DivX player. When the video is opened, two ffdshow icons (one for audio and one for video) appear in the tray. The subtitle is activated in the ffdshow video "Subtitles sources" menu. However, when I right-click on the video in the DivX player, it does not allow me to select any subtitles; that option is grayed out. Also no subtitles are displayed (not even the GAB2 that I saw with VLC).

    I think it is clear there are subtitles within the container. MPC, VLC, and ffdshow are detecting them at least, and VLC at least displayed *something*.

    Perhaps it is a matter of finding the right codec or whatever to properly display the subtitles? Is there a tool I can use to help us more in getting to the bottom of this? Something like GSpot? I think that one's more for video though? I have opened the file in GSpot but cannot find anything regarding subtitles. I may be missing something, though. It does have a lot of obscure places to find information. There might be a better tool...

    You could try opening the file with VirtualDubMod and have a look at the steams list to see what's there

    OK, VirtualDubMod only lists the audio and video streams:

    Code:
    ---== Video stream ==---
    Source : [Input AVI file]
    Description : AVI video stream

    ---== Other stream ==---
    Source : [Input AVI file]
    Description : AVI audio stream 1 [tag 0x0055, MPEG-1 Layer 3 (MP3)]
    So, what about the subtitle track "Track 1" that VLC shows available?
    Or, the subtitle source that ffdshow shows "embedded (Text 2)"?
    Or, the properties of the file in MPC showing "Text [Text 2]"?

    If the file contains xsubs (and I have a few of these ) the only way that I can see the subs displayed on the PC is by using 'GSpot'.
    Rendering the file in GSpot, both the DivX Manager and the 'Direct VOB SUB" icons display on the taskbar and the subs start.
    Nothing else that I have tried shows them.

    Sadly, that does not work either. Have we gotten to the point that I should upload the file to RapidShare or something so you can all check it out? It's ~233 MiB.

    We have a upload limit of 6MB. Can you cut out a representative piece of the video that contains your subs in that size? Alternately, you could give us a link to a download site like RapidShare that is easily accessible and use a somewhat bigger file.

    AVI-Mux GUI

    AVI cannot handle subtitles

    AVI can work with text subtitles, as AVI-Mux GUI and DVobSub/VSFilter prove.

    WOW I just wanted to let everyone know that I finally figured out what the problem was!

    All I had to do was, in Media Player Classic, go into View -> Options -> Playback\Output and changed the DirectShow Video to VMR7 (renderless). And do you see what those two stars say? "Required for loading subtitles." I saw that and gave it a shot and now I can see the subtitles! Wonderful!

    Later!
