I'm converting an MKV to MP4, and wondered what would be recommendations for such.

    1. merging softsubs (.ASS format). Can MP4 take such, and what software would I need?
    2. If .ASS files can't be done, can any?

  2. mp4box, the GUI is YAMB.

    Only .srt, idx/sub, .ttxt, .xml

.ssa/.ass can still be used outside of the container with DirectVobSub:
    file.mp4
    file.ass

The "problem" with MP4 is that if you intend to play back on a Microsoft XboX 360 or a Sony PS3 then the subs must be hard encoded otherwise you get no subs.

Thanks. Another problem I ran into is this mkv has AAC, and three sets of the same subs. It's a major resource hog, and can't convert, even to avi. Argh, this is why I hate MKV, no set standard. Oh well, time to improve the video again, and make it a playable video...

  5. aac works fine in .mp4 , but not in .avi -what's the problem with aac?

use mkvmergegui, checkmark the stuff you want, uncheck the stuff you don't want, create a new .mkv then put it into the .mp4 container

    or

mkvextractgui to extract the raw streams, yamb to put the stuff you want into the .mp4 container

It should only take a few minutes when "swapping containers", you are not re-encoding anything so you are not losing quality

What is your end goal? Fulci mentioned PS3 or Xbox360 ?

Problem isn't AAC (which I have a converter for) or H.264 codecs, it's the MKV container. As you have noticed in my signature, I'm not its best fan. I will say one thing on AAC, it's not a better codec, it just stores things better than mp3 (course I can't understand why anyone needs better than CD quality audio, unless in DTS .

As far as goal, making a video I can easily convert for use in an iRiver, Archos, or Philips DVD player. The iRiver supports AVI with divx/xvid coding, Philips supports AVI and .divx, and Archos supports AVI, MOV, and MP4.
