Hi,
I'm looking at getting a capture card around $350 dollars. I mainly want to capture the videos from my DV SONY CAM onto my computer so I can edit them in Adobe Premier and put them on DVD's. Does anybody have any good CAPTURE CARDS they could recommend to me in the middle class range.
I am also looking at capturing Surfing Footage onto my computer and would like a CAPTURE CARD that I will be able to connect my HDMI CAM in few weeks.
I look forward to your suggestions.
Thank you.

If it's DV you just need a FireWire card and copy the tape to the HD. There's no capturing involved. Capturing would require decoding the DV to Analog and reconverting that analog signal to digital. A waste.

So this would mean the signal transferred through a FireWire card would already be in digital format from the DV cam?
Also, what purpose do those expensive capture cards serve for video editing as I do intend to start making my own sport videos so I would prefer to have some type of editing features in the card?
What would be a good card for such purpose? (around $350 mark) -
HDMI would be the Black Magic Intensity http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/

DV camcorders record digital in DV format. Transfer is by digital stream over IEEE-1394 (aka I-link or Firewire). Using free programs like WinDV, the "captured" DV-AVI file is bit equivalent to the tape (i.e. no generation loss).Originally Posted by azza6
If your computer lacks an IEEE-1394 port, you can add one for $7-30. WinDV is free.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

Those are either for capturing analog video or support uncompressed transition or realtime color correction effects (e.g. Maxtor or Canopus). That hardware is tied to the same manufacturer's software. Prices are above $350 last I looked.Originally Posted by azza6Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

I have looked at the Blackmagic Intensity Pro Card (http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/) and the features look good on it. Has anyone used this card to say if its worth paying $359?
I have also looked at the AcedVio card (http://desktop.thomsongrassvalley.com/products/ACEDVio/index.php#keyfeatures)?
Can anyone point me in the right direction in getting a good particular model that I mentioned or others that you think are good for someone starting out in making and editing sports movies with future compatibility in mind (HDMI)? -
List the camcorder formats (sources) that you intend to use. The AcedVio is mostly for analog input/output and for use with Edius software.
