  1. Hi!
I've been using Dvd Shrink for a while now, and while there isn't anything wrong with it and it does pretty much everything I need, I just want to make sure I'm not missing out on the latest and greatest out there.

DvDshrink hasn't been updated since 2004.. would you all suggest something different for doing basic DVD backups? Usually I backup the whole thing, with all the extra materials, but sometimes I just backup the main chunk. I like the choice DVDShrink gives me for that.

Just checking to make sure I'm not missing something absolutely amazing by using the same old same old for all this time. Plus, my friends have some questions and I'd like to recommend the most up to date stuff.

DVD Shrink may (will ?) run into problems with newer discs, especially those from Sony and Disney. You will need to rip with the latest version of DVDFab HD Decrypter (free) or AnyDVD (payware) to get around this.

While I still use DVD Shrink for re-authoring from time to time, I rarely, if ever, use it for size reduction any more. DVD Rebuilder with HCEnc provides far better quality, and on a fast machine doesn't take a great deal of time to do it. If the reduction is only 5% or so then Shrink is OK. I certainly haven't written it off, and install it on all new machines because even if it's ripping is (and always has been) pretty average, it has many other handy features that make it a must have.

Ahh, yes. I have run into those problems and just written them off as the big corporations actually finding a solution to the problem (though my newest drive just read quite a number of discs I was having issues with)
    Thanks for the tips.

No, you're not missing anything amazing, especially in freeware programs. Many newer DVDs need to be ripped to your hard drive first to be able to use Shrink because of newer copy protection, but DVDFab Decrypter can do that, also free.

I use Shrink for the main movie backups mostly. If there is too much quality loss, then DVDRebuilder is another program to consider. But it takes much longer than Shrink. It's also freeware. All JMO, others may have different views.
