trying to copy to dvd using standalone DVD unit

Hi I am having trouble copying from my DVR to a dvd using my standalone unit. I am wondering if it is the way my system is hooked up or if it is something else that is wrong. I hope this is in the correct forums and I apologize in advance if it is not.

I have my dvr/cable box and dvd recorder hooked up to my hdmi input on my denon receiver. I have my tv hooked up hdmi output on the receiver. Everything works fine, i can watch dvds, movies, cable HD channels, etc.....but when I try to copy some material that is recorded on the dvr/cable unit to DVD, all I get is a black screen when I playback. It looks like it is copying fine, but there is no playback audio or video.

I have checked the DVDs to mae sure they were compatible and they are. I am wondering if I need to hook up my DVD recorder directly to the DVR/cable box and not go through the receiver. Does anyone have any experience in this?

Simple answer, HDMI cable box outputs require an HDCP handshake to pass a signal. HDMI TV sets have this. By intention there is no DVD recorder with HDMI in or HDCP decryption.

In the future, there will be HD Tivo like devices that connect by HDMI but with content protection (no digital exit).

You're best bet is analog out. Sorry as eddv mentioned hdmi recording is not standard yet. Though there is a blacmagic pc capture card that can accept hdmi in but I'm sure there is a lot it can't record because of the hdcp protection issues.

You could look into the hd fury or other hdcp strippers.

Recording component is generally not supported. There are a few standalone boxes that do it if that is what you are asking. Receivers take HDMI (controlled for no digital recording), S-Video and composite NTSC. The industry wants digital recording limited to digital islands with controlled monitoring (e.g. HDCP).

Currently, DVD recording from a "receiver" is limited to standard definition S-Video or composite. A few receivers downconvert HD to SD internally. The big issue there is recording in other than letterbox.

You can connect S-Video + audio directly from the DVR to the DVD recorder. That is the way most people do it. In that configuration, the DVR is doing the downscale to S-Video but most DVRs output only in letterbox format.
