Hi all,
I'm new to video converting. I deal mostly with avi, MKV, and mp4 videoes. I'm looking at using VirtualDub. But I'm having trouble determine what were the differences between the VirtualDub, the VirtualDubMod, and the VirtualDub-MPEG2. They all seem to have overlapping capabilities. Is there one that I should choose defer to the other version? What's your thoughts and recommendation?

I believe the later versions of VD, 1.7, etc., have better MKV support. VD Mod and VD Mpeg-2 have several capabilities, including opening MPEG files. But the newest VD can also do that with the correct plugin, also MKV. VD Mod has limited MKV capabilities.
They are all basically the same program, some versions just modified for more special purposes. I still favor VD Mod most times, as I like it's setup better. But other have their own favorites. With MKV, you might want to also become familiar with MKVextractGUI.
VD has a lot going for it. It can capture, edit, filter, and frameserve to other encoders, besides quite a few other operations. And it's freeware. Look to the bottom of the toolpage for each version and you will see a few of the guides available. Well worth having in your toolbox.
And welcome to our forums. -
Hi redwudz,
Thank you for the great info. This sure help me decide which version to go with. Based on your input I'll stick to the VirtualDub 1.7.8 and shop for the right plug-ins. Is there a good place to look for the VirtualDub plug-ins?

I believe there are links to the plugins on the download page but if you want to get all the updated plugins, the Virtualdub forum is the place to go.

I'm using Virtualdub 1.8.1-test12 right now. Looks like I'll have to download the new test release...

Other than VDMod, do the others have installer versions? I ask because I'd like to select them from All Programs. When I use them now, I type "c:\program files\(VD version folder)\VirtualDub.exe" into the "Run" prompt. No big deal, I was just wondering. -
AFAIK, they are all .exe files. I just R click the VD .exe file and pin that to my start menu. No need searching for it.
