Amazon got into the online auctions market a few years back to compete with eBay, didn't they?

Given eBay's fee increases and new feedback rules (sellers can't leave negative feedback to buyers for any reason including nonpayment/fraud), I decided to auction my DVD's on Amazon instead.

I like the auction format... no price research required. Just list at 99 cents and let each title find its own price.

So where are the Amazon auctions? All I can find are fixed price sales. I can't find out how to list as an auction. Did Amazon get out of the auction business?

    Thanks...

The company launched Amazon.com Auctions, its own Web auctions service, in March 1999. However it failed to chip away at industry pioneer eBay's juggernaut growth. Amazon Auctions was followed by the launch of a fixed-price marketplace business called zShops in September 1999, and a failed Sotheby's/Amazon partnership called sothebys.amazon.com in November.

Amazon no longer mentions either Auctions or zShops on its main pages and the help page for sellers now only mentions the Marketplace. Old links to zShop now simply redirect to the Amazon home page, while old links to Auctions take users to a transactions history page. New product listings are no longer possible for either service.

The only other option I used is craigslist.org

Not an auction at all - more like an on-line clasified add (but free). Private sales between you and the seller.

Big advantage here is you can see adds that are local - you see something you want then you contact the person and arrange a meeting. If the product and price are good you make the deal.

Definitely not a replacement for eBay but I like Craigslist because I get to see what I'm buying and I don't get screwed over with shipping.

I'm sure you could buy stuff from other cities and arrange for shipping but Craigslist offers no protection.

  8. There are also sites like kijiji.com and used"city".com (ie. usedottawa.com), which are essentially like craigslist.
