    Hi, everyone.
I'm about to buy a new standalone DVD player and I'm interested on Pioneer DV-400, but I have some questions about it.
The function I'm most interested is the Divx/Xvid support, but I don't know if the player is capable to play these .avi files with subtitles support.
Does anybody know if I burn a DVD with lots of films and put each movie in a folder with more than 1 .srt file I'll be abble to switch between these .srt files, choosing the language I would like to watch the movie with?
    Thanks.

It's impossible to answer your question. Make a disc and take it to a store a try it. There are too many variables here. SRT usually works on DVD players that support Divx, but any of these things could be problems

Some players demand that the name of the AVI file and the SRT file be the same. So if your movie is called MYFILM.AVI, your SRT file must be called MYFILM.SRT. Some players don't care about names.

There may be character limitations to your names. For example, names longer than 8.3 may not work. For example, MYFILM12.AVI is OK, but MYFILM123.AVI is not.

Some players may not allow folders.

All languages are NOT supported for SRT files. Latin character sets should be OK. Cyrillic might work. Other character sets (ie. Chinese, Arabic, Hebrew, etc.) probably won't work. Unicode almost never works for any characters outside of the Latin alphabet.

If the SRT file was edited on a non-Windows computer, the end of line won't be what the DVD player expects and it may refuse to read the file.

There may be problems with your AVI files that have nothing to do with SRT that may prevent the player from playing it.

Unfortunately I can't test the player in a store because it's hard to find Pioneer players here in Brazil. I'll need to import that is the problem.
So I need to find someone here who has this player and tell me if it can really handle .srt files and browse the disc for other ones. It would be perfect to me.
Thank you anyway for the help.
Anyone else could reply this thread?

    According to the manual:

    • For external subtitle files the following
    subtitle format filename extensions are
supported (please note that these files are
not shown within the disc navigation
    menu): .srt, .sub, .ssa, .smi

I decided to buy the player, since I read about its specs on the owner's pdf manual. I got all the information I wanted.
The player has just arrived and I tested. I does support subtitle files and can switch between different languages, as long as they are stored in the same folder of the movie itself. You just push the 'subtitle' button on the remote control to change.
It's really a good player and I recomend to everyone.
Thank you all for helping me.
    Eduardo.
