    hi

i bought this player recently at a discount store. I haven't hooked it up yet but i have read the instruction manual and it says it's set at Region 1. and from the looks of it it can not only play NTSC but PAL too. i looked at several dvd hack sites and googled as well but i can't find much info on this player. the back of the player reads manufactured date April 2011. does anyone know if this player has a region free code? please let me know if anyone can shed light on this.

yeah i figured that. but i thought i had a chance since there's a lot of Curtis brand players that have hack codes for them. i also thought maybe there's no hack code cause maybe my player was a new model perhaps?

Curtis player may be RCA and not many of those hackable. Which player do you have?

Problems like this are why you need to be sure BEFORE you buy anything that your player can be hacked. Most players sold in the USA and Canada can no longer be hacked due to pressure from Hollywood on the manufacturers. Your model may have hardware differences between it and other Curtis models that will mean that it can't be hacked. I suppose it's possible that some months from now someone might come up with a hack that works. We've had working responses as late as a year after the original post. But the vast majority of times where someone has to ask for a hack don't ever get one.

It's ugly, but if you don't have a lot of PAL discs you could always rip them and reburn them as region free discs and they should play if the player does support PAL playback (ideally it would convert to NTSC output for the best chance of success with whatever your TV is).

A year or so ago The Usual Suspects put pressure on Chinese manufacturers to stop making their players easily hackable by simple RC keystrokes, on the threat of legal action, and withdrawal of the right of being allowed to accumulate Western debt (software "updates" tended to disable this user friendly option after this threat, with no other effects other than a new Splash Screen).

I think Seiki's original manufacturing plant is in Taiwan which doesn't have to obey those "Usual Suspects". Their player is region free for BOTH DVD and Blu Ray. Firmware upgrade last month DID NOT disable that feature. Gotta love those that buck the trend...
