  1. I'm in the market for a 500gb SataII hard drive.

I've narrowed my search to these two.

    Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 3.5IN 500GB SATA2 8.5MS 7200RPM 32MB for $89.00
    http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=14120DR9680&vpn=ST3500320AS&manufacture=SEAGATE

    OR...

    Hitachi Deskstar P7K500 500GB SATA2 7200RPM 16MB for $86.00
    http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=12040DR1700&vpn=0A35415&manufacture=HITACHI

I know Seagate is a great manufacturer but I'm hearing good things about Hitachi but personally not really familiar with them...

Thoughts? Or is there another brand/model I should be looking at?

The Seagate has a 5 year warranty and and 32MB cache.
The Hitatchi has a 3 year warranty and a 16MB cache.

That seems to favor the Seagate. Western Digital is also another main competitor.

  3. I noticed the Hitachi is named Deskstar. Is there any relation to the old IBM Deskstar?

hitachi took over making ibm drives. the old "deathstar" lives!

i'd spend an extra $10 and get a western digital drive. i have 3 of their 500s and one seagate 500. the seagate is a really noisy bastard compared to the w.d.'s.

I have to 2nd this. In my experience, Seagate drives tend to be a bit louder than most. If thats not an issue for you, then a seagate is a fine choice. Personally, Id go with a WD. Never had problems with a WD myself.
