I am using XP Pro SP2 and I have Nero 8 installed.

I am using Nero Vision to burn TV progs (these are old 50's & 60's stuff so I don't think they come under warez!!)that I have downloaded - mainly avi's - but it takes 3 - 5 hours to burn a 1 hour episode.

Much of it is in PAL format with some NTSC. I am burning it to NTSC. Is this whats screwing up the time?

    Am I doing this right?
Should I convert it to NTSC somehow before I burn it?

    All help gratefully received.

    Thanks.

That will not help and probably confounds the problem.

The avi's that you have will more than likely not be 'dvd-frame-size' 720*540 for NTSC, 720*576 for PAL so the first thing that is happening is that each frame is being re-sized.

Secondly, if you are attempting a cross-tv standard PAL to NTSC, additional frames must be created PAL=25 frames per second and NTSC = 29.97 frames per second.

After all of that, the ACTUAL burning time is relatively small.

I do doubt whether Nero can actually do what you want successfully. Search the forum for PAL to NTSC conversion guides and consider other re-sizing utilities. Maybe Super can do this.

First off, if it is taking that long, it is because they are being "converted" to NTSC first, any conversion is going to take a good amount of time, and nero prob. does it slower than some others.

Just burning a disc will take a fraction of that time.

Personally i use ConvertXtoDvd to do such xvid/divx conversions, and it does it without adding extra frames, and they come out as good as you could hope & then burn with ImgBurn.
I don't know how nero does it.

Although there are other free alternative programs.

I was able to convert with a trial copy of vsoConvertXtoDVD2 and after the conversion it immediatlely burned off to dvd without intervention.

The finished product was 4 .vob files, 2 ifo files and 2 bup files. I assume the ifo files are info?? and the bup files are some sort of backup???

Anyway, it all seemed to work ok although there was a watermark that kept popping up.

It looks good enough for me to purchase a copy.

    Many thanks for everyones help.
