My only question is why are they trying so hard to make us give up our hd dvd players.

That's a nice offer from Best Buy. About time they did something for positive PR.

My only question is why are they trying so hard to make us give up our hd dvd players.

DVD Jon has a Toshiba unit, and is working on creating an ssh tunnel over the ethernet connection. This will allow owners to upload a modified MythTV/FreevO/XBMC/ to ram, connect to your local network and stream media to your big screen in upscaled glory.

    Or maybe not.
Linux _is_ user-friendly. It is not ignorant-friendly and idiot-friendly.

It seems to me that they're giving away the $50 gift cards, no strings attached or trade necessary, that's actually pretty nice of them, they didn't have to do that, good PR move:

As the owner of an HD DVD player, you may have concerns about these developments. At Best Buy, we are dedicated to making sure you always have the right technology for you. That's why we're offering you a complimentary $50 Best Buy gift card for each HD DVD player you purchased from Best Buy before February 23, 2008.
The trade-in thing isn't HD-DVD player exclusive but includes many other electronics as well, and is seperate from the $50 gift card. Just another way to get people into the stores and spend money, I can't imagine that they're paying very much for the used stuff.

If this is possible, would this allow playing Xvid-HD or DivX-HD material over the stream? If so, it would be a great and cheap Hi-Def media streamer. Are there certain model(s) of the HD-DVD player one would have to get to do something like this?
