My original file was ac3 encoded with a h264 video file. All my audio conversion tools would not want to do ac3 to aac, after getting one application to do a wav to aac via dbpoweramp, neroaac encoder would crash on the second try of the exact same audio conversion.

I tried several other applications and the same windows error message saying that nero's encoder has crashed....

is there any other way I can convert to aac without using the problem filled nero?

    Hi
WinFF will convert wav files to aac (m4a).
    It's cross-platform open-source freeware from BiggMatt's website.

WinFF is a GUI for ffmpeg.
ffmpeg is a fast file converter often used with Linux.

I expect that WinFF will convert straight from ac3 to aac in one jump.
There's an inbuilt player with WinFF, so if the player will play the ac3 file then the converter will almost certainly convert it.
    And there's a forum too.

There are versions for Windows and Linux.

  3. Both these options work, I just tried on a sample clip to confirm.

    1) megui's audio portion can do this, but the learning curve is very very steep, and you have to configure it properly first

    2) Foobar can do this too, but you need to download the ac3 plugin here (its the 1st one): http://kode54.foobar2000.org/
and place it into the foobar program folder (in the components folder)

If the original source is mkv, separate your ac3 audio by using mkvtoolnix (mkvextractgui)

Open the ac3 file with foobar, right click and choose 'convert to'. Choose MP4 Nero. Now you can enter settings (like VBR, bitrate, quality etc...). Note it will ask you to find the exe (neroAacEnc.exe), just "point to it"

    Cheers

    @poisondeathray

Well, ckamc has two choices now.
    He can flip a coin.

An advantage with using WinFF is that ffmpeg comes with hundreds of codecs built in. No need for Nero. 8)

But it doesn't matter which he chooses, as long as it gets the job done.

yeah I currently use mkv extract then when I get the audio correctly done I just merg it together again, works great so far.

Thanks for the ffmpeg link, if that fails I will try the hard to use megui

I tried to use winff and I get this error

    chcp 1252
    title Converting Track2.wav (1/1)
    "G:\Program Files\WinFF\ffmpeg.exe" -i "H:\Track2.wav" -vn -acodec aac -ab 112k -ac 2 "H:\agk_tmp\Track2.m4a"
    del "D:\Documents and Settings\Ckamc\Application Data\Winff\ff080225213709.bat"

same thing when I try with my ac3 version

  7. ckamc - I would try option 2 (foobar2000) first if you are unfamiliar with megui

Your ac3 file might have bad frames - it might be worthwhile running it through ac3fix (or ac3fixgui)

yeah just tried two different codec options with megui, will check it now with the ac3fix.

hopefully the foobar isnt too hard to do, the guide is kinda old so I remain a bit unsure about it.

    Never mind problem solved.

Played around with megui and found the correct preset/codec to use.... but I forgot so I am going to have to do the same process over again to figure out which one of the settings worked.

I hope it works out the second time with these internal codec's... really do not know why these other apps are having such a hard problem.
