When I rip a DVD, and decide to re-author it, issues occur with subtitles. I am no expert at this, and it is probably a simple problem to fix, but I don't at this point know how to fix it.
On the burn of the re-authored DVD, the movie will start without menu (expectedly) but then if you bring up subtitles, you will get various English subtitle tracks. With experimentation, these are usually the effects:
1. English (either fully ON or fully OFF)
2. English (director's commentary or something like that)
3. English (ON or OFF but ONLY displayed when foreign/invented language is spoken)
Obviously what I'd like, is track 3 to be automatically coded to be ON, or whatever track contains subs that are only used for foreign languages.
The strangest example of this of late is when I ripped Eastern Promises, menu intact, it still defaults subtitles to off, even though there is occasional use of a foreign language. You then have to manually select track 4 (or something) in order to get subtitles that only come up when Russian is spoken - however, these are displayed as Hard of Hearing subtitles with the prefix "speaking in Russian" displayed each time.
Also Atonement had a similar issue; whereas even less foreign language is spoken in this, when it is used, this again is defaulted to OFF even with menus intact.
Rendition is the worst example; menu intact but swapping between English and a foreign language, and manual adjustment of subtitles needed throughout the movie.
Is there any software that can 'review' a DVD author and code the subtitles appropriately, or as I see fit?
Thanks
