 heh, I was wondering if you could burn a S-vcd onto just a DVD-r without the use of a DVD-RW?

You need a DVD-R(W) burner to burn a DVD-R(W) disk. A CD-RW burner cannot burn a DVD-R(W) disk.
Also, SVCD is not part of the DVD spec, but will most likely play on most players. You will need a DVD authoring program that will acept a SVCD file for burning.
