I don't know if this will really help you,But i had the same problem before,I wasted several dvds trying to burn, out of 10 dvds i would burn about 2 if im lucky and the other 8 would be messed up from the computer crashing half way through,i was using a brand new dvd burner and the jumpers and everything we're set to the right settings,i even tried moving the jumpers around and still did the same thing,so recently i found out my harddrive was failing,so i got a new harddrive and im usin that SAME dvd burner now and it works fine,HARDDRIVE FAILURE causes a lot of crashes, check your gear!

Make sure that you are running DMA not PIO.

The master/slave thing has to do with IDE addressing. You can have only one device with a specific address. Each IDE channel, IIRC, can support two drives, one in "Master" and one in "Slave" configuration. Setting them both as "Master" or both as "Slave" can cause problems as both devices are trying to respond to the same information. Setting one (usually the DVD burner) as Master and the other as Slave on a given IDE channel solves this problem.

Most modern computers have two IDE controllers built in, one for the hard drive(s) and one for the optical (CD/DVD) drives. Usually the hard drive(s) are connected to the primary IDE controller and the optical drives connected to the secondary IDE controller.

Also, as SCDVD suggested, check to make sure you're running in DMA mode and not PIO mode. PIO will cause your burner to burn SLLLLOOOOOWWWWWLLLLYYYYY.

To check DMA/PIO mode within Windows:

    Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager>IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.

From there, right click on one of the channels and choose 'Properties>Advanced Settings'. All drives should be DMA mode. The 'Current Transfer Mode' for Hard drives is usually DMA 4-6 and DVD burners DMA 2-4, DVD ROMs usually DMA 2. If you see any in PIO mode, that can slow things down.

Changing them back may be easy or complicated. First see if you can change them in that window. If not, I usually uninstall the channel the drive is on and let the OS reinstall it. This will usually take a reboot. This will not damage any files on the computer.

Is the - or + something to do with this stuff?.....
    Not likely.

can I burn in safe mode?
Won't work any better, if at all.

Do I need to format this?..
No, unless you are using RW discs.

Its not my new burner its my windows version....but what do I do?
But it could be your jumper or burner settings.

Give us more info and someone may have a 'cure'.

sounds like the OP dvd burner is stuck in PIO mode or he has a VIRTUAL DRIVE installed which could make the dvd burner burn at slow speeds. memo33 try uninstalling that virtual drive & use IMGBURN to burn your dvd media.

either way if the OP won't give the needed information then there's nothing anyone can do.

It makes no difference if the drive is in dma or pio modes ... drives that find difficulty reading some disc's may drop into pio mode completely , but this dose not pose an issue for burning to media .

Second , as it hasn't been asked yet , could the op when they return confirm the drive works on a system which dose not use the extra 4pin power plug ... most p4's do .

We had a similar issue before where the drive worked perfectly on all other systems where that extra 4pin power was not in use ... p3's / amd's ... the drive was replaced for another brand which had no issues ... the dodgy unit was badged as hp , replaced with lg .

  13. You might also look for updated firmware for your drive. It may be that your drive cannot properly handle the discs that you are using.
