  4. Gee, an MPG file for making a DVD, whoda thunk it?

Produced HOW, WHAT source, what BITRATE, RESOLUTION, type of AUDIO, programs used?

Similarities or differences to other, successful files? Previous successful use of DVDWS, and changes in process, PC, or MPG since then?

Is your file too big? Well, gosh, I don't know....

    HOW FREAKING BIG IS IT????????????

It was captured with DVDWS 2 with my Sony handicam. I am not sure of the bitrate. The audio is LPCM I presume.

I have not tried to load any other files except MPEG, except audio and image fiels and they load just fine. And nothing has changed on my Pc since the install except that I installed Photoimpact 12.

If you capture with DVSWS then the clip goes straight into the time-line. You do not have to import it.

837 mb at full dvd quality would only be 12 minutes. How long do you expect the clip to run.

It sounds like a bad capture. Have you tried playing the mpeg in a player ?

It does go on the timeline but when I go to selet the file to edit DVDWS stalls and closes.

It plays in Windows media player just fine.

Load the clip into Gspot and upload a screen shot of the result or post what you read on the screen here.

Have you applied all the updates for DVDWS? First place to start.

  11. I had the same problem and a reinstallation made the trick! You could try unistalling and re-installing.

    Screen cap from GSPOT

I haven't tried to run the update packs yet, but they are downloading at the moment so we will see shortly.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling 6 times now. I don't think that is the issue. Or it may be I don't know. We will see how the update packs do.

Ok. I've never tried using DVDWS with a non dvd-compliant mpeg-2 but this file does does even get close.

Have a closer look at the capture settings for mpeg and you should see one for 'DVD'. That will be a good start.

320*240 is not even VCD quality. you would have to use 352*240 for that.

    For DVD 720*540 is best.

And capture should be at least 4000 kbps. 8000 is ideal

Sound should be LPCM - not mpeg

In DVDWS, when I click on the "DVD" capture settings in clicks back to MPEG on it's own.

I will try the updates and then use the settings you provided.

Where do I change the settings for capturing?

You're going to create a very poor DVD with that video. If you're capturing from a digital Camcorder you should be using DV-AVI as the format.

Are you by any chance transferring the footage from your cam with a USB cable?

No. I am using red/white/yellow AV cables and a capture device.

Is that a digital cam (digital-8 or mini-DV)?

Which capture card you using? Generally the best software to use for capture is whatever the manufacturer provides. Import into DVDWS after you capture.

Transfer over firewire, you don't need capture card. Fire wire cables are about $15, you'll also need a firewire port on your computer. If you don't have one pci firewire cards can be picked up at electronics store for about $15. It's plug and play device, should install without any effort on your part except plugging it in.

The video on your camera is already digital hence the reason you don't need a capture card, when you transfer the footage as DV-AVI over firewire its simply copying the file on your camcorder to your computer. It's a lossless transfer, import that file into DVDWS.

I don't suggest letting DVDWS2 encode video, only author DVDs (it can encode menu video, but nothing more).

Encode in something else, where you can control the settings.

How much more control do you need? You can set any bitrate or any resolution.

    Am I missing something here?

It's not as if it has poor encoder either. The best? Guess not but more than adequate.
