  1. Will I get better quality by converting to Digital with a Digital Videocamera with a "passthrough" for analog or is the DC10+ just as good. I would use it to convert old Hi8 home movies to SVCD. Thanks, Ken

  2. Hi,
I can talk about the dc10+ since I have it. Be prepared to spend a lot of time to that task. DC10 capture to mjpeg at different quality level. Even if you do not edit the captured file, you will need at least one conversion to bring it to mpeg1 (vcd) or mpeg2 (svcd), which takes long hours

My little recipe after taking information here and there (thanks to the other members).

Capture at 320x240 (mjpeg) (my tape are 8mm)
    Edit in the Studio +
Save to a file using Huffyuv codec(cut time in half)
Encode to vcd (better, xvcd at 2500)
(to play on my pc, I encode with ms media encoder to wm8. Save space 2gig in 50megs, quality is good)
    et voilą!

I did many test with higher capture resolution, convert to vcd or svcd. There is a small improvement in quality, but not enough (in my taste at least) to justify the space (x4) and the long encoding time (on a P3-600).

    Hope it help!

  3. Just wondering what is the latest in capture and convert with a DC10+ card. Assuming I use Virtualdub first to create a multipart AVI file. Can I then use Nero with MPEG encoder (or Tmpenc) to directly make a VCD file?

Still his question has not been answered he wants to know if there's a difference in quality capturing analoge footage by dc10+ capture card or pluging his footage to analoge inputs of a digicam then through the firewire connection to the pc.
