Some players simply cannot be hacked...especially the bigger name players.

...and among those; especially Sony.

So what are you supposed to do then? Obviously the player is picky, so will it not play any type of personally burned *VOB files? I tried searching a tiny bit but I can't a specific FAQ for sony dvd players with a work around for those that have other interest besides playback of regional disc.......

I'm just asking for a friend on mine, some people like to match up brands with their A/V electronics for some crazy reason. So you're saying no matter what type of blank media you use, burner/software you have nothing will work?
Sorry I'm in the middle of writing or I'd try the search but aren't the PS2's good at reading a lot of things?
As for the search engine goes it's not very helpful for some crazy reason no matter how I word things... -
your friend wants to match up brands w/AV electronics then he's gonna have to suffer w/out any region free hack for his SONY dvd player. which is why most have more than one dvd players. i have like 4 region free, PAL/NTSC dvd players and I do have one SONY upconverting dvd player as well. PS2 isn't the best reader, it can be picky depending on what dvd media you use and what dvd burner you use as well.

I'm a super noob so I'm going to ask some off questions...
So you're saying on your sony you only play retail bought region 1 disk?
Is it possible to convert/burn a video in such a way that it will end in the final result of being region 1 to work in a sony? Even if you Rip a dvd or whatever?
Lastly so the playstation is the only sony that plays a reasonable amount of media? -

It may be helpful to know the exact problem that your friend is having. You mention region free, but then you go on to say he is having trouble with burned discs.
Region free (which you likely won't find for the Sony, they either support it or they don't), is the ability to play discs from other regions. Such as playing a region 2 disc from the UK in your region 1 player here in the US.
Issues with burned discs are usually related to media. Some players (yes, Sony fits into this catagory as well) are very picky about the type/brand of media that they will play. Your best bet is to use a quality media. Verbatim and TY are the most reliable.
Also, as mats.hogberg pointed out, the process of ripping/copying movies can also remove the region coding. But again, just removing the region code isn't a fix for crappy media that the player can't read.

Therefore region 1 retail discs are always with NTSC video and region 2 with PAL, which doesn't mean that we can't have region 1 (USA) disc with PAL video content, or region 2 (Europe) disc with NTSC video, since region coding is just kind of 'artificial marker' added on the disc, that tells the player "this disc is for this region and not other" and dvd players supposed to refuse to play disc from other region than the region the player was set for. But almost every manufacturer don't give sh*t about this, and they include a "back door" that allow to change the player's region as owners wish or please (listed as "hacks" in our players database on the left pane). However some manufacturers, mainly sony due to its tight ties and stakes in the entertainment business (sony is one of major hollywood movie makers), don't allow for such "back doors" in their devices.
Burnt discs (including copies of region-coded retail discs) can be set to any or no region at all.
That being said, the NTSC and PAL systems are still valid considerations, and although many if not most players handle both PAL and NTSC video types, some manufacturers (again: sony is best example) chose to cripple their devices further in order to 'protect unathorized use' of the DVDs you paid for, and almost all of their US version players (NTSC) won't handle PAL discs, regardless of the disc's region code.

"Rip" retail dvd to PC, remove region coding, and burn it back on DVD-R, its that simple. As you see, "region coding" is a completely unimportant nuissance.
but
The problem is: is your sony dvd player able to play PAL video since it is US version (aka NTSC) player?
If "its a sony" then most likely it was crippled by sony already at its designing stage and it won't play PAL because its not the "regions problem" but sony hardware design.
And playstation maybe is a good gaming console, but certainly its not any good dvd player. IMHO its not even mediocre player, its just crappy player at best.
