  1. 1) can I burn 13 gb avi files to blu-ray as a backup?

    2) how much do Blu-ray burners go for?

    3) How much do blu-ray blank disks go for?

    1. Probably, if you have a Blu-Ray burner and something to play the media back on.

    2. $500 - $600US or more, depending on the brand of Blu-Ray drive.

    3. $15 - $20US per disc, depending on where you buy it.

And being that even dual layer DVD discs seem to only marginally work at times, and only with a few brand discs and burners, I don't know that I would even try Blu-Ray until the format is a bit more developed.

  3. I want to back up my video avi tapes that have 13gb each, so this sounds like an excellent way to do it? Are people backing up this way?

  4. No they are not. HDD space is cheap...take advantage of it. You could get close to 2 Terabytes of HDD space for all that cash.

Yes. Though I don't have one bluray is nothing more than a dvd on steroids essentially - as far as digital data is concerned. Just more space.

But the other members are probably on the right track. You might find it better long term to invest in larger harddrives. That way you won't sacrifice quality or potential loss of data.

If you had a BluRay burner you could back ~111 minutes of DV format for ~$25 per blank. Or you could backup to hard drive or MiniDV tapes. 63min MiniDV tapes are down to less than $2.50.

...Or you could us Virtualdub and segment your AVI into 4.37GB chunks and burn to 3 standard DVD-Rs for a total of $0.90.
