  1. Hello, newb here. Tried searching for this type of question, but couldn't find anyone w/ my dumb down knowledge about this.

I just have a regular avi that I would like to extract the words from so I can create a subtitle text file. Can anyone tell me what is the easiest program to use for that? It seems like all the progs that I have downloaded, they want the existing subtitle file. I don't have that. I'm trying to create one for the avi.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You 'might' be able to use a speech to text converter, like Dragon Naturally Speaking, but it's a very long shot. Most times there is too much background audio noise to be able to use such a program. Even if you are able to get a text file, there will be a lot of errors to correct.

Most cases, it would be easier to do a internet search for subs that someone else has already done.

Alternately, you would have to listen to the video, then note down the speech and create your own subtitle text file a word at a time. That's generally how someone does it if you are able to find it on the internet. A fair amount of work.

Outside of someone else creating subs, there's no easy solution.

The other issue with most speech to text programs like Dragon is that they have to be trained to understand the voice of the speakers. This is done by repetition of key phrases by the speakers until the software is happy. Unless you can get the actors to come around for a training session, you are unlikely to have much success at all, even without all the other impediments mentioned by Redwudz.

There are plenty of subtitles on line if you google for most movies and many TV shows. Otherwise use something like subtitle workshop, where you can watch and type and correct as you go.
