I seem to have a lot of trouble with my 500 Gig Lacie drives. These are the aluminum case models. Under warranty, and now out of warranty. Power supplies are often an issue. Of the three I have, two are now down. They start acting up by taking a long time to be recognized when turned on. Lots of clicking and carrying on. I put everything on two different drives for safety, but this seems to be rather unsafe given the failure rate.

What's better in the stand-alone plug-in high gigabyte area? I have both USB and Firewire connections only.

These drives are physically so nice to deal with, but my experience is that they are pretty unreliable. Is that just me or are others having less than good experience with Lacie.

Sounds like defective or just low grade hardware. You could stick with Name brands, such as Western Digital, or buy your HDD's and external cases seperately and "build" your own.

I've personally switched to the internal racks with removable trays.
