I bought a new Gigabyte P35-DS3L mobo to replace a dead Biostar mobo. The current situation is under hardware device manager there's a ? mark for PCI device. Originally I had 1 pci controller card and 1 pci fireware card installed with all the drivers installed for them. But I continued to have a PCI device ? mark. Then I uninstalled all the pci cards from the pci slots. I still had the PCI device ? mark when there's nothing installed in any of the pci slots. I've never had that before on any of the computers I've built. Is this a defect on the mobo? I was suspicious about the mobo because I've never seen a mobo come in a antistatic bag with a piece of scotch tape on it. I'm wondering if the mobo was not a brand new spanking one.

I've already reinstalled xp pro and the problem still exists. I have another Gigabyte mobo the P35 DSR3 that has 2 pci slots used but I don't have that PCI Device ? mark in that computer. I'd hate to have to RMA the mobo back to Newegg but I don't wanna keep a mobo that's defective. I'd appreciate any comments/help. Thanks in advance!

did you install all the motherboard drivers from the cd that came with it? sounds like a built in device windows can't figure out, maybe because the mb is newer that what's in XP. intel, audio, video, 1394, network, sata, etc.? check the listed bios devices and match them to the windows installed devices. if it's something you don't need disable it in the bios and then it won't show up in windows.

  3. I have a 965P-DS3 and the same thing. Every time I boot up it wants to install something, but I'll be damned if I can figure out what it is. I just ignore it. In another computer I have a P35-S3L and no question marks. Weird, eh?

    Thanks for the replies!

aedipuss I haven't installed anything from the cd yet since I reinstalled xp. I'll try your suggestion of matching up the bios devices and windows devices.

    manono It sure is weird!

I found the solution! Once I installed the Microsoft UAA (Universal Audio Architecture) Bus driver from the mobo cd the PCI DEVICE ? mark is now gone. That Microsoft UAA Bus driver supports the HIGH DEFINITION AUDIO for AZALIA.

Good deal I have that on my Gigabyte MB also. Don't know a whole lot about it, but I installed it with my Vista computer. Gigabyte is vague about it. They show both the standard driver and the AZALIA one. I guess I lucked out, I just installed the latest one, which included that driver. It shows that name in my BIOS, though I really don't know much about it.

My MB has S/PDIF and optical audio out, in 5.1 Dolby format, I think. It may be 7.1. I suspect the AZALIA driver has something to do with all that. I would still recommend you check the BIOS updates to see if you have the most recent one. Most Gigabyte MBs seem to be a fair amount behind with their included discs. The one I used with my Vista computer was about four BIOS versions back from the latest. And updating the BIOS made quite a difference. A lot depends on when the MB was released. If it was a year or two ago, the MB disc is likely far out of date.
