Do you have to go to college?
I consider myself pretty expert, I've even repaired much badly encoded commerical video that was apparently encoded by experts. Though just for my own uses. So, I began to think how about doing it for a living.
How does one go about this?

You don't need college but I do believe a college education is very important for most people anyway...besides college is fun! Start applying to companies who do this kind of work. Here's one in LA for DVD:

Oh yeah, I agree. I had ridiculous fun in college, well they're called university's here in the UK. Unfortunately what I studied has nothing at all to do with video engineering.

Best way is to get a job at a pro video processing house and learn the tools and craft. Look for a market niche that isn't well served, create a business plan and seek investment from relatives, friends and your local banker.
That is the way most of these outfits got their start. -
